At the dawn of the 20th century, a number of the rose bushes could be found in the grounds of the Virgin Mary church in the village of Agros. During the period, the church was the monastery of the Greater area of Agros. History Nearchos Clerides In 1917, the late Nearchos Clerides ( uncle of Glafkos Clerides, the former President of the Republic of Cyprus ) was appointed as a teacher in his native village of Agros. He was behind the idea of expanding the cultivation of the rose bush with the aim of producing rose water. This would contribute to a substantial improvement of the standard living for the local community. He therefore founded the ‘ Pupils Association for the Dissemination of the Rose Bush’, aiming at expanding the cultivation of the plant. The members of the Association were obliged to plant and look after fifty rose bushes every year. Those who planted more than fifty rose bushes received a financial reward. One of the pupils of Nearchos Clerides was Nicodemos I. Tsolakis, who showed great interest initially for the cultivation of the rose bush and later on for the purchase and marketing of rose water. Nicodemos Tsolakis Many of Nearchos Clerides pupils are won over by the cultivation of the rose, and Nikodemus Tsolakis is one of them. From very young he is absorbed in its cultivation, and later in the systematic production and export of rosewater. It is the time when Argos will forever be linked to the rose and the production of high quality rosewater. Its reputation will expand beyond Agros to spread solidly throughout the island. From 1948, Nikodemus Tsolakis will dedicate himself to his private rose cultivation and his own production of rosewater, that four decades later he will pass on to one of his children, Christakis Tsolakis Christakis and Maria Tsolaki In 1987 Nikodemus Tsolakis invites his son Christakis Tsolakis, who has been living in Melbourne, Australia for seven years, to take over the family enterprise. Christakis does not need to think it over too long. The fragrance of the roses has not quite washed off yet. It is the perfect opportunity at the perfect time. On his return to Cyprus, he meets Maria and they create their own family. Together they immediately take over the family business. Retaining the characteristics of the people of their village, imbued with inspiration and with a sincere social and environmental sensitivity, they continue creatively and responsibly. They modernize the facilities of their small plant, the methods of production and widen the range of traditional products. Conscientiously they opt for bio methods of cultivation, a method for the future, considering it suits their philosophy perfectly: that of a gentle manner of cultivation and production which works according to the irrefutable advantages of a family business: efficiency, productivity, reliability.
